During the time of the Great depression in America, food was scare and rations were distributed. For people who did not live right where orange trees were-Oranges were something that was hard to come by. People would give oranges as a present because it was a treat, it was special and had value and meaning to the receiver. Oranges still are given as a gift today, partly as trandition and because people thought that was a great gift if they got oranges.

This is probably the case in North American culture, but in Chinese culture, pairs of oranges are handed out during the Chinese Lunar New Year period. This is a time when people visit each other in their homes, and usually a pair of oranges are given out to represent auspiciousness and prosperity for the new year ahead.
