Before top dead center
It will vary depending on the specs for the engine. But, if it's a small block you'll probably be all right with something like 10 or 12 BTDC on the 1974 cars. I know in later years they backed the factory timing down to 8 BTDC on some of the smog-era cars.
1 (0 deg BTDC) - 5 (480 deg BTDC) - 3 (240 deg BTDC) - 6 (600 deg BTDC) - 2 (120 deg BTDC) - 4 (360 deg BTDC)
8 degrees BTDC. 8 degrees BTDC. 8 degrees BTDC.
Research has shown that there are a number of things that the acronym HSV can stand for. In relation to cars this would likely stand for "High Speed Vehicle".
Light duty 14 BTDC, Heavy Duty without catalyst 4 BTDC, Heavy Duty with catalyst 10 BTDC.
10 degrees BTDC
