No, there is no evidence to support this accusation. The first person to publicize this claim was conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, who said on Fox News that Mr. Obama has a "deep seated hatred of white people." He offered no proof, but his words seemed to resonate on Fox, and his claim was widely repeated. There still seem to be many people, the majority of whom are conservative Republicans, who believe it. (Other more moderate Republicans do not accept this belief, according to public opinion polls. They disagree with the president on policy, but do not believe he is a racist.)
The truth is that Barack Obama was raised by his (white) grandparents, went to majority-white schools, and has had numerous white friends all his life. He has no history of saying anything negative about white people, contrary to assorted fake quotes you can find on the internet. Nor does Mr. Obama have a history of supporting anti-white policies or discriminating against white people. While anyone is free to believe whatever they want, even Glenn Beck eventually had to reverse himself on what he said about Mr. Obama; but on the internet, his original claim can still be found, as can an audience of people who want to believe it.
Actually, he has made statements in the past that would lead one to believe his racism. He said the reaction to Hurricane Katrina was because" The people down in New Orleans they don't care about them as much!"
He also referred to his own grandmother as a "Typical white person" that was mistrustful of blacks.
There are other incidents as well.
His black father no doubt cost him some votes in elections and he likely heard some racist remarks on the campaign trail, but I think he was not greatly affected . He grew up in Hawaii which has many people of mixed race, so I think he saw less racism than he might have elsewhere. Columbia and Harvard are pretty much color-blind now, I think . I do not know about Occidental.
The fact that he won on his first try for the Senate and the presidency indicates that he did not suffer much from discrimination. In fact, he may have received some votes from black voters and liberal whites just because of his color.
Based on his overall record, US President Obama has treated racial issues in a fair way. His goal is reconciliation rather than conflict. He did make an error by commenting on the "Martin" case in Florida. It's improper to criticize or comment on the justice systems of various States. His promised "follow up" on the case has vanished.
I am not sure any one person, even the president, can stop racism, but the fact that the United States has a black president and first lady is an important symbol, and a positive step forward in the country's racial history. Also positive is the fact that there are a number of important people in government (senators, representatives, governors, mayors, etc) who are black, Hispanic, Asian, and from other non-white ethnic groups. President Obama has spoken out against bigotry of all kinds, and he has invited people to work together to encourage tolerance and understanding. But he cannot do it alone, nor should he be expected to. Still, it is undoubtedly encouraging to young people of color to see a black president, especially one who came from a lower-middle class upbringing; it proves once again that it is possible in America to work one's way up and even become the leader of the nation.
No. There is no indication that Barack Obama is a racist.
