  1. Matthew {22:34} But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. {22:35} Then one of them, [which was] a lawyer, asked [him a question, ]tempting him, and saying, {22:36} Master, which [is] the great commandment in the law? {22:37} Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. {22:38} This is the first and great commandment. {22:39} And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. {22:40} On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
  2. "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them [Matthew 5:17]

It is very helpful that the above quotes are not in Greek or Hebrew.

  1. First, Jesus was asked: which is number One in the Law. Jesus replied: Thou shall love (i.e. worship) the Lord thy God and added "Love thy neighbour as thyself" as the number two.
  2. Secondly Jesus on number 1 and number 2 hang all the law and the prophets. But who are/were the prophets - these are chosen men selected by God to convey and deliver messages to mankind - God do not need to come down and do the job himself. (Read the story of Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16:24 "they have the Prophets let them listen to the prophets)
  3. Having told us what the number 1 and number 2 in the law was and the job of the prophets, Jesus went on to tell anyone who cares to listen - I have not come to change the law (worship God alone) or the Prophets (i.e delivering the message of the number 1 in the law). Any other perspective may be added below (please).

When Jesus says For this is the law and the prophets what admonition is her referring to?

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (Mth.9.12) Meaning that the whole law of Moses and all the writings of the Prophets lead to this one simple law. And this is confirmed by the New Testament prophets also: "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love [is] the fulfilling of the law." (Roms.13.9,10)

Why might a historian say that one ancient religion judaism set the scene for a new religion Christianity?

Complex question, but most basically, because Christianity claimed to be the fulfilment of Judaism. God, in what Christians called the Old Testament and Jews call the Law and the Prophets, promised a Messiah who would atone for the sins of Adam and Eve, and of mankind generally, as well as fulfilling a number of other prophecies in those writings. Jesus claimed to be this Messiah (or Christ in Greek, meaning Anointed) and therefore the fulfilment of the law and the prophets.

Is Christianity a social construct?

Jesus who is also called the Christ from whom Christianity came said "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them" (Matthew ch 5). The law and the prophets came from the Jews who were the chosen people of the Living, Infinite Truth we call God who made heaven and earth and all things in it.
