ESR test is done to determine how long does it take the red blood cells (Erythrocytes) to sink to the bottom of the test tube. In certain conditions, (mostly inflammations or infections, but also in pregnancy), sedimentation time differs from the normal.
While the test itself does not identify the exact cause, namely the specific disease, it is still useful, as further tests could be based upon its results.
