GMC doesn't stand for General Motors Corporation. According to the book "GMC The first 100 years," published for the brand's Centennial in 2002, brother's Max and Morris Grabowsky formed the Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Company in 1900. The brothers then incorporated the Rapid Motor Company and sold their first model in 1902. Rapid was brought under the GM umbrella by Billy Durant as a division in 1909. The first GMC logo appeared on 2, and 3-ton trucks at the New York Auto Show in 1912. To continue from the book "GMC the First 100 years" - "Although some people mistakenly believe the letters first stood for 'Grabowsky Motor Co.' GMC was actually an acronym for 'General Motors Co.' " There was also a "Truck and Coach Division" of GM, which was formed in 1912. The division's first General Manager, William Day, started nine days before the GMC logo was registered as a patended trademark on Sept 10, 1912.
