HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. It uses high voltages to create an arc of electricity in a special mixture of gasses and metals to create a powerful bright light that is normally whiter than halogen bulbs. As there is no filament, bulb life is usually longer than equivalent halogen bulbs.
They are used as headlights on some high end-cars and are an added-cost option on some vehicles. Factory fitted HID lights usually come with a washing system and self-levelling.
Aftermarket HID lights can be added to most vehicles that converts them to HID bulbs. This requires replacement bulbs and a ballast unit to generate the voltages required.
