Holden finds Mr. Spencer's comment about life being a game with rules to be simplistic and lacking in real understanding of the complexities and challenges of life. He rejects the idea that life can be easily defined by rules and feels that it trivializes the struggles and confusion he is experiencing.
Holden is naturally stubborn, and doesn't like doing what he is told. Holden wants to live life by his own rules and be different. Holden has the capacity to be smart and do great things, but he chooses not to.
