II Kings doesn't say anything about Elijah's death. Most folks don't believe he did die, but was taken to God's throne in heaven.
Elijah's death is verified [along with Enoch's death] in the 11th chapter of Hebrews.
"By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death [the SECOND DEATH -- Rev.20:6]..." (Heb.11:5).
"...THESE ALL DIED IN FAITH, not having received the promises..." (verse 13).
"...what shall I more say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and OF THE PROPHETS..." (verse 32).
"...these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise... that they without us should not be made perfect." (verses 39-40)
Jesus came centuries after Elijah to assure us:
"...NO MAN HATH ASCENDED UP TO HEAVEN [the 'third heaven' of His Father's throne], but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of Man which is in heaven." (John 3:13)
Many folks who profess Jesus' name refuse to believe His words... but there they are for anyone to believe if they want to.
Elijah was taken up into the "first" heaven within the earth's breatheable atmosphere [just like people are taken up into heaven from airports around the world today]... and set back down somewhere else on the earth [just like people do today all around the world]. And he died at some later date... just like people do all around the world today.
We aren't told when. We are only told that he did die -- in Hebrews... not II Kings.
Accounts differ concerning his death. Some say he died peacefully in Boeotia, and others say he was crucified with St. Andrew at Patras or at Elaea in Peloponnesus. The Bible does not record his death.
