Answer:

Jesus meant exactly what He said. The impossibility of a camel going through the eye of a needle was a shocking image that clearly illustrated a rich man's impossible plight to replace his all-consuming love and trust in his possessions, overcome his carnal nature and replace it with a love and trust of equal power in God. (even if he wanted to, as did the young man who walked away in sorrow)

It even shocked His disciples: "...they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?" (Matt.19:25)

And that was exactly the point Jesus was making: "...With men THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE; but with God ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE." (verse 26)

It was a straight forward illustration of carnal minded man's struggle against spiritual Truths that diametrically oppose our selfish nature.

Only by the power of God may the flesh (the material world) be overcome by the Spirit.

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

The world seems impossible to overcome at times. That's why we need to know our limitations... and to hand it all over to the One who has overcome it for us. The impossible is possible with God... if we love and trust Him.

What should you know about Matthew's Gospel?

A:If you are a passive Christian, you need know nothing about Matthew's Gospel, other than the contents of the Gospel, which are in any case largely to be found in other gospels. If you wish to be reassured whether or to what extent the gospels are a true account of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, then you may need to know more about how, when and why Matthew was written, and by whom. You will also need to know what sources the author used. Most Christians still believe that Matthew's Gospel was actually written by the apostle Matthew, an eyewitness to the life and mission of Jesus, thereby making this gospel a particularly accurate account. However, the Gospel was actually written anonymously around the eighties of the first century, so we have no signature to tell us who wrote this gospel. The only reason to believe that Matthew was the author is that the second-century Church Fathers decided to attribute this book to Matthew. However, modern scholars say that Matthew's Gospel could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events portrayed, so eliminating Matthew as a possible author. We know approximately when Matthew was written, but do not know who wrote the book.Matthew is known as a synoptic ('seen with the same eye') gospel because when placed alongside Mark and Luke in the original Greek language, thereby 'seen with the same eye', it can be shown that there is a literary dependency among the gospels. Matthew was clearly copied from Mark, and contains some 600 of the 666 verses in Mark. This dependency not only means that the author could not have been an eyewitness, it also means that we do not have any independent accounts that would verify the original story of Jesus, in Mark.

What was the approximate birth and death date of St. Matthew?

Matthew is mentioned in the Gospels and seems to have been a tax collector. Since this would have been a responsible position, we can probably assume that, at the time of Jesus (around 30 CE), he would not have been a young man. Perhaps he was born a little earlier than Jesus himself. According to the Bible he was still alive at the time of the crucifixion. It was unusual in those days for commoners to live beyond 50 years of age. Many Christians believe that this is the same person who wrote the Gospel According to Saint Matthew. However, We do not really know who wrote the Gospel. From as early as we have anything like a title for it, the title was given with the Greek phrase "Gospel according to...", using kata, which ordinarily means that the contents of the books were not written by the person named, but that the person named was used as the source. The use of "kata" means the authorship was assigned later, meaning the Gospels were originally unsigned. Thus the author we now know as Matthew was different from the Matthew mentioned within the Gospel. Scholars say that Matthew's Gospel was based on Mark's Gospel and was written between 80-100 CE, although some may place it early in the second century. The most we can say is that this Matthew was born somewhere around the middle of the first century and may have lived into the early years of the second century.

Why is the Gospel of Matthew often called the first Gospel?

Based on the integrity of the primary sources that place the Gospel of Matthew first in the New Testament canon, it is often called the first Gospel by those of a judicious disposition. Primary Sources include: 1. Origen: His words relating to canon Scriptures: 'The Gospel of Matthew which he wrote in Hebrew on a roll, when he was at Caesarea...then the Gospel of Mark ...Gospel of Luke ...Gospel of John...' Ref: History of the Patriarchs of the Coptic Church at Alexandria, of Demetrius the Twelfth Patriarch. 2. Jerome: 'Matthew who had first set forth the Gospel in Hebrew letters in Judea' Ref: Jerome, Preface for the Gospels. 3. Hillel III (circa A.D.100): Cites the order of the gospels as Matthew Mark Luke and John. Ref: p. 248 Hillel Letters, The Archko Volume. 4.Irenaeus: 'Matthew issued a written Gospel among the Hebrews in their own dialect'. Irenaeus then cites the other gospels in the order of Mark Luke and John. Ref: Against Heresies Book 3 Ch. 1. 5.Epiphanius: 'For Matthew was the first to become an Evangelist. He was directed to issue the Gospel first.' Ref: Panarion Book 2. 50.1. 6.Mahboub: 'Matthew wrote in Hebrew to the Hebrews', where follows in listed order, Mark Luke and John. Ref: Agapius, Universal History; the Second part of the History of Mahboub.

Did Matthew write in the Bible?

A:Matthew, one of the twelve disciples, was credited in the second century with writing the gospel that now bears his name but was originally anonymous. However, modern scholars say that the gospel could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events described. One of the reasons for this is that it has been demonstrated by a parallel reading in the original Greek language that Matthew's Gospel was substantially based on that of Mark. An eyewitness would never have copied another account so closely. This means that Matthew did not write the gospel or any other book in the Bible.

How long after Jesus' death were the Gospels of Matthew Mark Luke and John written?

Most biblical scholars accept that the Gospel According to St Mark was the first written of the four canonical Gospels. Mark's Gospel was written in Greek, and there is ample evidence that Matthew's Gospel and Luke's Gospel were based on Mark's Gospel. St John's Gospel appears to have been based on Luke's Gospel, but the author clearly also knew Mark's Gospel and copied some material from it. Ian Wilson (Jesus: The Evidence) says that it can come as a shock to discover that no-one can even be sure who wrote the gospels. Nevertheless much scholarly study has gone into establishing approximately when they were written.Mark's Gospel was written in the late 60s or very early in the 70s CE, thus around 40 years after the most commonly accepted dates for the death of Jesus.Matthew's Gospel was written after Mark's, but before Luke's Gospel. It is generally considered to have been written in the 80s CE. This means that it was probably written more than 50 years after the death of Jesus.Luke's Gospel is generally considered to have been written in the 90s CE, but could well be from early in the second century. It comes some 70 years after the death of Jesus, and long after all his contemporaries were dead.John's Gospel is generally considered to have been written a little after Luke, and a date early in the second century is probable. Once again, this Gospel is dated more than 70 years after the generally accepted date of the crucifixion.

What is Matthew 19v24 saying?

In Matthew 19:24, Jesus is speaking about how difficult it is for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven, likening it to a camel passing through the eye of a needle. The verse emphasizes the challenges that wealth can pose in terms of prioritizing material possessions over spiritual matters.

How did Matthew write the Gospel?

A:It is a Christian tradition that because Matthew was a disciple of Jesus, he simply wrote down everything he learnt from Jesus. Some even say that Matthew's Gospel must have originally been written in Aramaic, even if we have no early Aramaic manuscripts. Matthew's Gospel was actually written anonymously and was not attributed to Matthew until later in the second century. Scholars say that the Gospel could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events portrayed, which means that Matthew could not have been the author.Matthew's Gospel was written in Greek, and scholars have shown that it was largely derived from Mark's Gospel, with additional material from the hypothetical 'Q' Document. Whenever Matthew agrees with Mark, the passages are surprisingly similar, often being written in exactly the same words in the Greek language. This could not have happened unless one of the gospels was being copied in Greek, and scholars are satisfied that Mark was indeed the original. Scholars are unable to identify any source for the material unique to Matthew, such as the nativity and resurrection accounts.

What are the 4 gospel writers and their meanings?

The word "Gospel" means a proclamation preached by Jesus Christ. The 4 gospel writers are the 4 Apostles of Christ who recorded these preachings for us in the Bible. They are gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are placed at the beginning of the New Testament and make up about half its total text.

Is the Gospel of Matthew the best source for information about Jesus?

A:As a disciple of Jesus and eyewitness to the events in the mission of Jesus, Matthew's Gospel ought to be the best source of information about Jesus. But this is probably not the case. All the New Testament gospels were originally anonymous and were only attributed to the apostles whose names they now share later in the second century. Contrary to tradition, biblical scholars say that none of the gospel authors could have been an eyewitness to the events described. They say that Matthew was actually based on Mark's Gospel, containing some 600 of the 666 verses in Mark, often in exactly the same words in the Greek language. It also shares a second source with Luke, that is now known as the 'Q' document. In other words, Matthew is a purely derivative gospel and we could consider Mark to be a potentially more reliable source for information about Jesus. However, Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that Markseems to depend on traditions (and perhaps already shaped sources) received in Greek. This means that even Mark's Gospel need not really be a reliable source of information about Jesus.

Was Paul or any of the authors of the four gospels an eyewitness to Jesus' miracles?

It is believed that Paul did not witness Jesus' miracles, as he converted to Christianity after Jesus' death. The authors of the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, were not eyewitnesses to all of Jesus' miracles, but they compiled their writings based on oral traditions and accounts from early followers of Jesus.

Did Matthew's Gospel come from one of the other gospels?

A:Yes. When laid alongside Mark's Gospel and viewed synoptically ('with the same eye') in the original Greek language, it can be seen that Matthew's Gospel contains some 80 pe cent of Mark. It also contains a smaller amount of material from the hypothetical 'Q' Gospel. Scholars do not know the source for some material unique to Matthew, but say that much of it could not be historial.
