President US Grant's recollections on the US Civil War Battle of Shiloh were written after his presidency and when his health placed him near death. Sadly Grant was dying of cancer and wanted to leave his family a decent inheritance. Grant died of his disease in 1885. Samuel Clemens ( Mark Twain ) assisted in the publication of Grant's work. The two volume set was titled Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant. Some historians believe that Grant made serious error at Shiloh by not entrenching his army upon reaching Pittsburg Landing. His account leaves out the fact that General Halleck sent him to Pittsburg Landing, while Grant makes it seem it was his idea. Grant also takes the time to say that Confederate General Albert S. Johnston was over rated. General Grant's commanding officer, General Halleck left his headquarters in St. Louis to take command of Grant's army shortly after the Battle of Shiloh. Grant was returned to his command when General Halleck was summoned to Washington DC in July of 1862 to become the Union's new general in chief. Based on Grant's health and the fact that the Battle of Shiloh was in early April of 1862, it can be understood that certain details may have been forgotten. Happily for Grant and his family, the publication of his works were a great success. Many literary critics have hailed it as a great piece of work.
In order to learn how to generalize, you need to learn how to tell what's important and what isn't. The best way is to pretend you're telling the story to your best friend - but you only have five minutes to tell it because he or she has to leave on the next train. Telling them the story helps you to distill the general facts and learn how to generalize or summarize.
