Without the Mercury in a CFL you wouldn't have light. The ballast in a CFL supplies initial current which excites the mercury which releases photons, or light. The mercury does not produce visible light, this happens only once the light passes through the phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb.

When will be the Mercury lamps will be stopped in market?

If you are referring to fluorescent and CFL lamps, it can never be totally eliminated. These are mercury vapor arc lamps using a phosphor to turn the UV to visible light. They have reduced the mercury dramatically, but it can't be totally eliminated. If all fluorescent and CFL lamps were banned and lighting was all converted to LED then use of mercury could be stopped. However most LED lamps cost at least ten times what CFL lamps cost.

Are CFL bulbs bad for your health?

CFL Bulbs are not bad for your health unless two things happen. 1. They break -- Just go to the EPA website and see instructions for cleaning of CFL's and ask if you want to bring this kind of light near you or your children 2. Or they do not get recycled properly CFL's contain between 2.5-4.0MG's of Mercury and also contain other gases that are not good for your body. This Mercury if its not disposed of AKA Recycled will eventually work its way into a Creek, River, or Ocean because of the watershed from Landfills. Mercury levels in fish have been raising for years and is the reason why Dr's are asking the public to limit the number of fish that we consume. Mercury is a "heavy metal" as is Lead!! Mercury has been linked to MANY medical conditions that range from Autism to Kidney failures. Please think before adding this hazardous chemical into your homes. The Fluorescent tubes in our offices contain more Mercury than CFL's and they are not recycled in most states.

Are their risks from CFL bulbs?

Compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs contain mercury which can present a safety issue if the glass breaks. The broken glass also presents a safety hazard more immediate than mercury. Some CFL bulbs, when operating, generate electromagnetic waves and inject interfering electronic signals into the home power line which can mess up electronic devices and interfere with cordless phones, wifi and radio reception.

Do energy saving light bulbs have mercury in them?

CFLs do, they could not operate at all without somemercury. However they have much much less than older style fluorescent bulbs/tubes and the manufacturers are improving them so that today's CFL has less mercury than one from a couple years ago and a CFL made in a couple years should have even less.LEDs don't.

How much mercury is in one CFL?

The amount of mercury in a typical compact fluorescent lamp is approximately 5 milligrams (mg), barely enough to cover the tip of a ballpoint pen. To ensure that the amount stays this small, NEMA members agreed in April 2007 to a maximum mercury content of 5 mg in CFLs up to 25W, and 6 mg in CFLs with higher wattages. This commitment represents a ceiling. The actual average is estimated to be about 3-4 mg as manufacturers continue to design lower mercury versions. By comparison, an oral mercury thermometer contains 500 mg to 1 gram of mercury-or 100 to 200 times more than a CFL.
