Microsoft Excel is the name of an electronic spreadsheet application that is produced by Microsoft and informally known as Excel. It is the leading spreadsheet application at the current time, and versions of it have been around since 1985. It is the most popular, but not the original electronic spreadsheet. That was VisiCalc, invented in 1978.
