Nothing, Narcan is used to reverse opiate toxicity. It can only be used to reverse the effects of opiates.
May be given 0.4-2mg IVP every 2-3 min. up to 10mg. If not reversed, probably not an overdose of opiates.
Narcan (naloxone) is used to reverse the respiratory depression caused by opiates. Otherwise, the treatment is to treat the underlying cause and to support the respiration with oxygen and, if needed, mechanical ventilation ("breathing machines").
The drug Naloxone is generally used to treat people for an overdose of opiates (for example, morphine, codeine or heroin) in an emergency situation. It is sold under trade names including Narcanti, Narcan and Nalone.
Narcan
The antidote for morphine, and most other opioids, is a medication called naloxone, or Narcan. It blocks opioid receptors, blocking the effect of morphine, heroin, or any other opiate medication. The effects of naloxone are short-lived, however, and may require further dosing to keep the patient from slipping back into a coma. If a person has taken an overdose of morphine, they are usually given an opiate antagonist, such as Narcan. This acts very quickly in reversing the effects of the morphine, or any other narcotic. Narcan is also sometimes used in drug rehab; it helps the body to go through the withdrawal symptoms more quickly. But this must be done under the supervison of a doctor on an in-patient basis (sometimes while the patient is under general anesthesia), since sudden withdrawal of narcotics can cause serious or even fatal reactions.
Drugs that produce opposite results in the body. i.e. Narcan and opiates. The opposite term is antagonism. These are drugs that work like the drug.
Rather the opposite. Narcan is a narcotic blocker. It's side effects are akin to those of a stimulant.
Both opiate medications are very powerful painkillers that achieve the exact same results. The hydromorphone has 16mg of opiates and the oxycodone has 60mg of opiates. Both are time release so don't cut them in half and then take them or you could overdose. Its always best to take the lowest dosage that works and increase that dose only when the lower dose is no longer working. Whatever you do be sure to stay in contact with your doctor before making any changes in dosage of any medication but this is especially true with any opiate medication. It's also a good idea to have some Narcan on hand just in case of an accidental overdose . Narcan can and will will save your life. Your doctor can prescribe Narcan for you and it's cheep.. Opiate pain medication is highly addictive and that addiction will creep up on you and you won't see it until it's late. Take it from an old veteran it's no fun being addicted to opiates then trying to get clean. It will be one of the hardest things to have to go through. Unfortunately for most addicts it usually doesn't end well. Take Care, Stay safe and good luck!
