The two Goddesses represent the state motto, "Liberty and Prosperity". Liberty is on the left. She is holding a staff with a liberty cap on it, and the word liberty underneath her. It is named for the Isle of Jersey off the coast of Normandy France and may derive its name from the Vikings where ey is a commonly used term for Island. The Jersw has been lost in the historical record.
