It's a short term memory or area for quick calculations: like the top of your desk, getting papers off of it is very fast, but it is limited. Hard drives are like the drawers in the side of the desk - can hold a bunch of information but is very slow. If you are doing a project with papers, you put the most important on the top of the desk and get what you need from the drawer as you need. RAM = Random Access Memory. The random means you can access any place in the memory without having to read all the data before the chunk you want (sequential access: tape drives.)
