The poem applies to the characters by explaining that you need to stay pure and make the most of everything. When johnny dies in the story, his last words were "stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold." This is meaning that he wants Pony to continue to do well in school and make the most of his life, but not for Pony to get sad over his death.
In "The Outsiders," the characters, like Ponyboy and Johnny, experience moments of innocence and beauty that are fleeting and cannot last forever, similar to the theme in Frost's poem. The idea that nothing precious can endure ties into the characters' struggles with growing up, loss of innocence, and the harsh realities they face in their lives. The novel explores the temporary nature of youth, relationships, and the fleeting nature of moments of happiness.
The first two lines in the poem mean that something can't stay perfect forever and eventually things change. The on about the leaf and flower means that a flower cannot stay in it's perfect form, again, things change. The last two lines mean that the sunset does not stay forever, something that perfect eventually goes away.
Well like Johnny said "When your a kid your gold" he also said that they was Ponyboy watches sunsets is gold and he should stay that way cause it is a good way to be. So when your a kid your gold but you cant stay a kid. and another example is Johnny was gold and he couldn't stay. So sad! I cried so hard when he and Dally died. and when Ponyboy is reading the letter that Johnny wrote him. Johnny said in the letter "Tell Dally that there is still good in the world, I don't think he knows it" but it is sad because it is to late to tell Dally.
Robert Frost's poem "Nothing can stay gold" means that nothing stays the same; that everything changes for a reason, that holding time isn't worth to keep. That savoring the perfect moments can't remain the same unless you let go.
The important lesson in this poem represents that no matter what you do, even if you flip the world upside down, time is always ruling our life cycles.
If you read a couple pages of the story after Ponyboy recites it, he and Johnny give a good interpretation. Or rather Susan Hinton describes it well. Nature's first green is gold Her hardest hue to hold Her early lear's a flower But only so an hour Then leaf subsides to leaf So Eden sank to grief So dawn goes down to day Nothing gold can stay. When dawn first hits the sky turns gold, then the sun moves up over the mountain or horizon and is up and the day has begun. The flower in turn - a new plant will grow and flower then as it matures the plant will drop that flower and leaves may fall off and be replaces so they are no longer new. We are born innocent, but as we grow and gain experience in the world we pick up bad habits and lose that innocence. All of these moments are rare and fleeting, but special.
He wrote the poem after the death of his very young few week old daughter who died of a disease out of the mother's womb.
