Nearly every time rod is reference is normally talking about a stick or paddle being used as a discipline instrument:Proverbs 13:24

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

In The Bible the word rod is usually the cane used in those days to punish children . You can read it in the book of Proverbs.
