He is partly Saint Nicholas, a real person, partly Odin, the leader of the Norse pantheon, partly the creation of Thomas Nast, the cartoonist, with input from the Coca-Cola people, the gnome-tales of Scandavia and the Ghost of Christmas Present from A Christmas Carol.
