Staging a tumor is assessing the extent of tumor spread. It's described in numbers, usually 1 through 4. For example, you might have heard someone say that a person has stage 4 cancer, which is when the cancer has metastasized and spread to other organs or throughout the body.
When a malignancy is diagnosed, tests are performed to assess whether it has metastasized (spread to other locations) and also to see how differentiated the tumor cells are (this is referred to as grading the tumor). So staging = assessing tumor spread and grading = assessing degree of differentiation.
Staging.
Cancer staging considers the size of the tumor, whether it has grown into surrounding lymph nodes and whether it has spread to distant parts of the body (metastasized).
This takes into account the size of the tumor and whether it has spread to the lymph nodes, adjacent tissues, and/or distant parts of the body.
"T" stands for "tumor" and reflects the size of the tumor.
Tumor removal is a surgical procedure to remove an abnormal growth.
