I have a Model 37 that starts with 282 and it was made in 1949. Ithaca's website (before they went out of business)had a place to enter the SN and get that info. Yours was probably early 1950's.

steel from older Ithaca model 37yes steel should be alright but it's but in agun manufacture aroun 1950 52 it's usually better to use shot no larger than # 2 assuming your barrel is in good shape. check with your local gunsmith. I've shot steel out an Ithaca 37 sereial # 649142-4.
