The Four Noble Truths of Buddha would be able to explain and help you answer this question.
1. Dukkha - suffering is real
2. Samudaya - the cause of suffering is want, especially the want for things to go perfectly or in your own way
3. Nirodha - suffering and hardship can end if you learn how to stop your wants (Nirvana: the state of pure spiritual peace, where all your anger, tire, need, and selfishness all goes away)
4. Magga - in order to reach this state, Nirvana, you must follow the Eightfold Path
Eightfold Path - it is the road to spiritual perfection and peace
A. Panna - intelligence and knowledge
1. right understanding of the 4 noble truths
2. right thinking to pave your way to righteousness, to the right path
B. Sila - morality and goodness
3. right speech (don't back stab, lie, etc.)
4. right action/personality/being (follow the 5 precepts)
5. right way of living, support yourself without having to do it by hurting people, etc.
C. Samadhi - concentration and meditation
6. right effort/perseverance (always look ahead, think positive!)
7. right mindfulness (remember the other people who live in this world, be considerate, you are not the only person in this world)
8. right concentration (concentrate well, find time to evaluate your goals regularly, etc.)

If you're looking for real-life, modern answers, I'd just say deal with it with your head always held high, never give up, and just always look ahead. Think positive. But keeping in mind what you're going to do. I guess it would be common sense.
The two primary tasks of Buddhist monks are (1) to learn Buddhist scriptures which is called Pariyatti and (2) to meditate to become enlightened which is called Paripatti. To make it brief, learning and meditation are the routine life of Buddhist monks.
Zen Buddhist centers are places of education about the life of Buddha, and about the Buddhist belief system. The centers are also a place of worship and peace for those affiliated, desiring to become Buddhist, or simply those who want to learn more.

A Buddhist's goal in life is to lead a good life. This includes living by the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Death is not seen as an end in life, only the start of another cycle of rebirth and death. Eventually, a Buddhist may become enlightened and escapre this cycle, if he chooses.

The reason life become difficult in the colonies in the 1890s was because everything was new and different in the new land. Farmers didn't know how or what to grow in order to survive the winters in America.
Children can become Buddhist just like Christian children are often encouraged to receive the Lord or be confirmed in their preteens.
