First is it the predaceous diving beetle (family Dytiscidae) water beetle, which prey on a variety of animals, including snails and fish much larger than themselves. or the water scavenger beetles (family Hydrophilidae), which eats plants. The whirligig beetles (family Gyrinidae) are oval, shiny, blue-black to dark brown beetles, about 3/4 in. (19 mm) long. They are found in groups in sheltered places, spinning around on the surface of the water. They feed on small insects on the surface and seldom dive.

I think that the water beetle eats mosquito larva, or other small water bugs/creatures. It lives in fresh water.

Most of the Hydrophilidae or water beetles are to small to bite, but the larger species might bite you, like beetles from the genus Dytiscus.
