The coins sometimes called "Spanish dollars" were actually 8-reale silver pieces issued from the 15th to the 19th centuries. They were widely used in Spain's North and South American colonies as well as neighboring regions. They were so common in the American colonies that the US silver dollar was made to have essentially the same size and weight so the two coins could co-circulate. These coins were first referred to as "Spanish dollars" in the late 16th century. They also were called "milled dollars", a reference to being mechanically struck.
