It allows you to store data so you can take it with you as it is portable

Answer

A USB memory usually called "pen drive" or "flash Drive" is a EEPROM memory devise.
It is used to store data and to transfer data from one computer to another computer.

This is the best way to transfer the data in between the computers which are not connected to one Network.

It is much more faster than CD ROM and is much more cheep than CD ROM (at least in India), and it is much more safe than CD ROM to transfer the data because it do not need support of any other hardware (like CD Drive).
