The CR2032 battery on the motherboard in desktop computers is used as a CMOS battery (basically keeps track of what the time is whilst the computer is not connected to external power (amongst other things)). In a laptop or netbook, the battery (much larger) can be used as a standalone power source, resulting in portability for a certain amount of time. Laptops and netbooks also have CMOS batteries, but are designed to last longer (as not easily accessible) so tend to not look like normal button-cell batteries.

If you are referring to a laptop battery, its job is to power the machine. If you are referring to the battery on the motherboard, its job is to keep the CMOS powered. This is a few bits of memory that remember items like your BIOS settings, and the time.

In a laptop it allows a portable source of power. However if you're referring to the BIOS battery, it powers the CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) in order to store data (Date, time etc - depends on motherboard-) After the computer has been switched off and lost it's main power.
