It can be a few things. Have you had a repair done to the engine or the exhaust system lately. If epoxy was used anywhere it can smell. Also raise the hood and look around for something a mouse has dragged into the engine compartment. Can also be a slight oil leak that is burning on the exhaust manifold. Lastly it can be coolant entering the combustion chamber and burning. This is usually caused by a blown head gasket. If you are loosing coolant with no apparent leak this may be the culprit. You need to have this looked into by a professional mechanic. A blown head gasket is serious and will cause severe engine damage.
it could be your burning too much oil or it is one of your belts. you can go to a mechanic to get it looked at.

Your engine will speed up & the car won't go any faster (transmission slipping) Or you can pull the dipstick & smell the transmission fluid if it smells burnt you may have a problem with the transmission.
Something is wrong with the catalytic converter.
strong burnt smell, cracks in friction material, if you put it in any gear and the car doesn't move or takes high rpms to make it creep.. the burning smell is always the dead giveaway without pulling the tranny..
You most likely have a leak or your car is overheating. If you are smelling it in the car then in all probability the heater core is leaking.
