It eats nothing because it's in a state of suspended animation until it emerges as a butterfly or moth.

Right now I have a caterpillar that made a cocoon on my see through container so I can see what it does. It stays and lies in the same place the whole time it is in the cocoon. It will grow, although it takes about 4 weeks for it to get it's right wing.
