The main purpose of a chest x-ray before having surgery is to ensure your lungs are healthy enough to be intubated. You will have a breathing tube placed down your throat while you are having surgery and if your lungs are not healthy then you might not be able to have the surgery.

This means your doctor is asking for a chest X-Ray (CXR). This could be due to a number of things, especially if you are seeing him or her due to a bad cough, shortness of breath or a number of other diseases. Things that can be seen on a CXR include:-

* Pneumonia * Tuberculosis * Heart Failure * Sarcoidosis * Lung Cancer * Enlarged lymph nodes * Calcification or hardening of bones * Fluid buildup in the lungs * Air/Blood/Pus/Fluid trapped in the lungs or between the lungs and chest wall.

The purpose of a chest xray, is to see how everything is doing near your chest or in your chest or your chest itself. So they could tell if like , anything is broken or needs fixing, just like an xray on your foot it's the same deal

If you are having any of the following: Shortness of breath, Chest pain on exertion, Suspected chest infection, Persistant or productive cough.

They should not be done to view fractured ribs.

Mediastinum

Hilum

Lung parenchyma

Hidden areas such as - behind heart, soft tissues, beneath diaphragm dome
