A crested gecko is a semi arboreal species of gecko from New Caledonia. This Country is a cluster of islands North East off of the Australian Great Barrier Reef. This species specifically comes from an island named "Isle De Pins" this translates into Pine (as in the tree) Island, as the country is still loyal to France. The island consists of thousands of pine tree's. It is very humid here all year round and temperatures range from 15-30 Celsius. This species was thought to have gone extinct until re discovered in 1994 due to a massive tropical storm that hit the country. Biologists had taken approximately 150 specimens back to North America and since then, the animals popularity has boomed due to selective breeding. Through selective breeding, hobbyists have re-created the animals physical appearance. The animals are known to come in multiple colors, patterns and physical structure, this is what is referred to as "Morphs". Due to their easy care and variety of morphs, crested geckos make one of the perfect geckos to keep.
These animals are solitary creatures in the wild although most females can tolerate one another in captivity. Some females will show signs of aggression towards one another and if this happens, the must be separated. It is recommended that for every adult crested gecko, 10 Gallons of space is required minimal. A male housed with a female, will breed. If the female is not fully mature, it can be detrimental to her health. This animals do not have a very strong jaw, as they are omnivores and can easily choke on loose substrates. Paper towel is a highly recommended substrate as it is easily cleaned, cancels out any impaction and retains moisture well. They will require multiple hiding spots and all sorts of items work for decorations: cork bark, birch wood, artificial greenery etc..
Their physical appearance is easily distinguished from other gecko species, due to the extending scaled from the animals neck, head and eyes. This is where they receive their common name as crested gecko or eyelash gecko. They will grow to approximately 8-10 inches depending on sex and reach 35-60+ grams. These animals have been known to live for 5-10 years in the wild and can live up to 20+ years in captivity if cared for properly. Males at full maturity can easily be distinguished from females due to the bulge that forms at the base of their tail. These animals have a prehensile tail, meaning their tail acts as a 5th limb for the animals. The tail can also easily detach from the animal as a means of defense or safety and will not regenerate a new tail.
The Crested gecko is an omnivorous species of gecko enjoying a mixture of insects and fruits, saps and pollens. In captivity, a formulated powder known as Meal Replacement Powder or Crested Gecko Diet, has been specially formulated for this species in order to thrive in captivity. It contains all of the required ingredients for the animal to grow: Vitamin A, C, D3 and E and many many more. Live feeders are still offered 2 times weekly for young geckos and at least once a week for adults. All live feeders should be gutloaded and coated with calcium.
A 'morph' in its simplest form is a variation in natural colouring.
For example. The 'standard' colouring for a Corn Snake is dark red patches, edged with black on a yellow background. However...
Selective breeding can produce colour variations from pure albino to completely black. These are colour morphs.
Crested geckos have a very soft exterior. They are not covered in thick scales or have any outer protection. Their skin texture resembles velvet and these animals can be consumed very easily. Mammals with sharp claws or teeth are predators, Spiders, birds of prey, other geckos, snakes and many more. A gecko is equipped with great eye sight and good hearing and in some cases, either claws or setae on their feet to help them scale their surroundings to escape.

Crested geckos come in a variety of colors and patterns, these are referred to as morphs. Spots along the geckos body, limbs and tail would be considered the dalmatian morph/trait. More desirable morphs called "pinstripes" have these extended scales running from the eyes to the base of the tail. These extended scales are sometimes referred to as "Crests." Thus, is where these animals received their common name "Crested Gecko"
