The peasant farmer worked on his lords land day and night. He got up at sunrise and worked until sundown so did his wife and children. He was required to put in the majority of the day working for his lord and the church. His wife got up fed the family usually with a barley soup or gruel, feed the animals they may have, go to work the fields ( all the family helped when crops were ready to be picked). It was a hard life and one that was cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The hovel they lived in had dirt floors and a fireplace. It smelled because of the tallow candles they used for light, of the smoke from the fireplace, and the fact they didn't wash very often. When there was a war the peasant farmer was required to go to war. His farm tools became his weapons. Many died in battle or if they lived came home badly hurt.
