you pick around the frog which it a triangle shape ( the sensitivity's part on the horses hoof ) and with the hoof brush you brush out your hoof :)

You pick out the horses hooves to check for stones, bruises, if your horse wears shoes you check for loose shoes, and other things that could be hurting your horse.

How does one clean the hooves of a horse?

Using a hoof pick you should gently but firmly hold up the horses hoof with your left hand. With your right hand use the hoof pick to scrape off any debris, work from the heel to the toe. Check for any looseness of the horse's shoe by gently pushing the hoof pick under the heel; if there is looseness you will need to contact your farrier.

What do you use to groom a horse?

There are many different items to groom a horse with. Probably the most essential one is the hoof pick, which is used to remove debris from the horse's hoof. There is the currycomb, which is used in circular motions to loosen dirt and shedding hair from the horse. There is also a metal currycomb, which is used to clean other brushes, NOT the horse! There is the dandy brush, which as long and stiff bristles. Be careful not to use this hard, and not at all on thin-skinned horses. There is the body brush, which has shorter bristles and is softer than the dandy brush. There are numerous different grooming supplies. Make sure to select the ones that are best for the horse you're grooming : ). The main types of grooming equipment needed are: a curry comb, a dandy brush (same thing as a hard brush), a soft brush, a finishing brush, a face brush (and a face curry comb), a hoff pick and a shedding blade. Just remember to always groom your horse. You don't have to give it a full groom, but just brush it's coat so there is no dirt stuck to the hair (with using the curry comb), brush the dirt off (either dandy brush or soft brush), and pick the horse's feet (hoof pick).

How do you get a horse to lift up his hoof?

For a front hoof, stand with your back to the horse's head. Slide your hand down the back of the horse's leg, and when you get to the fetlock (the bump above the hoof) squeeze slightly and try to lift it up. If the horse won't pick up, lean against it. That'll help the horse move its weight to its other feet so you'll be able to pick up the hoof better. For a back hoof, stand once again with your back facing the horse's head. Repeat the process, except you can slide you hand on either side of the leg. I slide my hand down the back of the leg.
