Nothing will happen if you put an hypen, or "-" sing before a word. If you are typing a word and you run out of room, then you would put a - before the page breaks. Also, you could use a hypen between a phrase such as "point-of-view." There are many ways to use a hypen, but using one before a word, I'm not quite sure.
If you are using Windows, open the Charmap application and look for a character that looks like a y with a horizontal line over it. Copy it, and paste it into Word or wherever you want to use it. I am not aware of any shortcut key (except for the Alt code, which you can also get from Charmap) for this character.
