Kiwis are a New Zealand bird. So they are located in New Zealand. But if you want to be more specific - the common North Island Brown Kiwi lives in New Zealand's native forests, pockets of bush, pine forests and scrub country on the top half of New Zealand. Basically , the habitat it lives in is forest.

Further information:

The kiwi's natural habitat is native forests but it is now found in kauri and coniferous forest where the undergrowth is dominated by tree ferns. However, due to habitat clearing, the kiwi is now forced to survive in semi-wooded forest, scrubland and agricultural areas. One variety, the Haast Brown kiwi, can be found in high sub-alpine tussock grasslands.

The Kiwi bird is an endangered species, they are native to New Zealand only, they do not adapt well to environmental change especially changes such as deforestation we cause. Our MAF department here continuously work to protect them and there are successful breeding programmes to help ensure their survival. The bird does not have a defence system so it is easy prey to other non native animals such as ferrets introduced to the country many years ago by the British. Predators also destroy the Kiwi birds egg making it very unlikely to be able to continue their species without the intervention & protection from us. All in all the answer to your question is rather vague as the Kiwi remains and always will likely be endangered species because it doesn't adapt well to what is happening around the globe at present.

If the question refers to adaptations of the kiwi, they have developed some adaptations to aid their survival.

  • Kiwis dig a burrow for the egg, or find a pre-existing burrow, as this is safer than a nest for ground-dwelling birds.
  • The female lays an egg which is about 6 times the size of an egg from another bird of similar size. Just before the egg is laid, it makes up 15-20% of the kiwi's body weight. this means the chick is more mature and well developed when it hatches - a necessity for a ground-dwelling bird.
  • Male kiwis share incubation of the egg, and they develop a bare patch on their abdomen, which is the "brood patch", a section that is used to keep the egg warm.
  • Initially, the chick feeds on a yolk sac which also prevents the baby chick from moving about the nest, but this is mostly absorbed after a couple of days. The chick then begins to feed on tiny pebbles and twigs which are stored in its gizzard to help with food digestion once it starts eating real food. Depending on the species, chicks are old enough to leave the parents' territory when they are 4-6 weeks old.
  • Kiwi are nocturnal, enabling them to hunt for food at night when there are fewer predators around. They have whiskers at the base of their beak and this is believed to help them find their way in the dark.
  • The colouring of the kiwi helps it to camouflage effectively, blending into its surroundings.
  • Kiwi have long beaks which are specially adapted for finding food. Their nostrils are located at the tip of their beak, and they have a very highly developed sense of smell, being able to smell out food beneath the surface of the ground. Kiwi will dig their beaks into the ground to a depth that extends the entire length of the bill in order to find earthworms and other invertebrates.

The kiwi is endemic to New Zealand. Its natural habitat is native forests but it is now found in kauri and coniferous forest where the undergrowth is dominated by tree ferns, as well as temperate rainforests. However, due to habitat clearing, the kiwi is now forced to survive in semi-wooded forest, scrubland and agricultural areas.

Different species inhabit different areas of New Zealand.

  • the Haast Tokoeka kiwi is found in high sub-alpine tussock grasslands of the South Island
  • the Brown kiwi is found only on the North Island
  • the Southern Tokoeka is found only in the far south of the South Island, as well as Stewart Island
  • the great Spotted kiwi is found in forest areas in the north of the South Island
  • the Rowi, or Okarito Rowi, is rare, and found only around Okarito
