A knock sensor listens for the 'knock' (or pinking), that shows that the fuel is exploding, rather than burning.

Via the engine management computer, it retards the timing of the spark, until the knocking stops.

'Knocking' can damage valves and piston crowns, if allowed to continue.

A knock sensor allows different grades of fuel to be used, without damaging the engine.
