What does a nurse do in a nursing home?

He or she is responsible for any care that involves dressings (ranging from peg site dressings, tracheostomy care and especially wound care dressings) or applying salves and creams. Any specialty care that is above the level of a CNA/GNA can be performed by the treatment nurse. Depending on the facility, they may also be responsible for charting, measuring and tracking the size and condition of any wounds or the potential for wounds in the facility/department.

We are a little of everything! Primarily, we pass medications and monitor reactions to said medications. Since a physician isn't always in the nursing home, we are responsible for assessing the residents and making sure we contact the physician if something is wrong. We contact pharmacy daily to order new medications, interact with the family any time something is changed and keep a continuous eye out for wandering residents. We do a LOT of assessing because we are our resident's voices when they can't speak for themselves.
