The purpose of a pulley is that it can lift heavier things at a quicker pace. Some examples of a pulley is a ski lift and alot of Roller Coasters have them also.

they can be used to decrease the force needed to lift the loads , as if u have to lift a weight of 50 N and u used a robe hanged on a single pulley , u will have to exert a force of 50 N, while if the rope was hanged on 2 successive pulleys , u will act by a force of 25 N and consequently if u have 3 pulleys u will act by a force of (50/3)N and so on.....

Pulley is a disc like mechanical component which has groove on its periphery.The shape of groove depends upon the shape of belt which have to be used.

these pulley and belt assembly are used in power transmission when the distance of transmission is quite greater and where gear transmission (gear train due to longer distance) can not be used.

generally "V" shaped (trapezoidal cross section) belt is prefer to avoid slip between pulley and belt.
