∙ 13y agoAssuming that you are referring to an "S" directly under the date, that is the "mint mark" of the coin, and it signifies that it was produced at the San Francisco Mint. A "D" would signify Denver and no mintmark at all would signify Philadelphia.
Note that, from about 1980 onward, the Philadelphia mint has used a "P" mintmark for all coins except pennies (which continue to be without a mintmark).

That is the Mintmark.It is the S Mintmark.
It means it was made at the San Francisco mint.
If it is a "S" mintmark Eisenhower dollar, it's 40% silver, if not, no silver.
An "S" mintmark just means that the coin was made in the San Fransisco Mint.
If you mean a real silver dollar, such as a Morgan or peace dollar the thickness is 2.4mm
