What country are you talking about? And do you mean a first year apprentice, or a first year fully qualified mechanic?
For a mature age 1st year apprentice mechanic (21years or older) the award rate is $12+ /hour.

yes, you can join ibew as an apprentice. they will most likely make you start over as a first year apprentice however. a first year apprentice in the ibew makes as much money as a 3rd or 4th year open shop apprentice.

A heavy duty mechanic can make over $1500-$2000 a week if qulified but for a apprentice you can make about $500-$1000 a week, so they will probs put you on 2 weeks work and 1 week brake that means you will proberly make $2000. It all depends on how long you work :)
