A cell phone is nothing more than a hand-held transmitter/receiver (Tranceiver) - The only difference is that the cell phone is full-duplex (can talk and hear at the same time) - unlike a conventional radio (Push the talk button to talk, and let go to hear) What makes this simple tranciever a cell phone is the infrastructure supporting it - i.e. the cellular telephone network. When you dial a phone number, your little radio will authenticate and connect to the most available cell tower, and forward the dialed digits to be connected on your behalf. Anything that happens between your cell phone and the cell tower is on a radio network.
