Achromatic means "without color". An achromatic lens is a lens that is virtually free from prismatic color distortions.

What type of colour is black and white?

Black and white are not colors in the traditional sense. They are achromatic, meaning they lack hue and are composed solely of lightness (black) or absence of lightness (white). They are typically considered as contrasting tones rather than colors.

Are black and white colours or are they shades?

they are achromatic colors because they have no hue?and even though some people may tell you that white is the presents of all color and black is the absentsif you mix the primary colors (Red Yellow and blue) you will get whitebut what most people forget if you mix the complementary colors (cyan , magenta and yellow) you get blackironic isnt it you mix the 3 opposite colors to white and you get the complete opposite to white (black).they are not classed as normal colors however because you can not make any new colors out of black and white on there own.but if you mix them with other colors white acts as a tint and brightens the color (makes red into pink) and black acts like a shade and makes the color darker (makes pink into red).so half the colors that exist today would never of existed if the achromatic colors did not exist.
