ADHD NOS means NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED. IT refers to a category of diagnosis for people who have some prominent symptoms of hyperactivity, inattention or impuslivity, but who don't meet the full diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Basically, it is a garbage-can diagnosis for people who don't meet the full criteria but have some symptoms.
So, does this mean that I'm not adhd? I saw a psychologist that diagnosed me adhd nos. I have found myself to be extremely impulsive. Now I'm doubting the validity of my diagnosis that took me 2 years to get the courage to seek help.Any thoughts?
Although I have never seen the notation I can immediately identify with the problem.
Little stoty here.... 20 years ago I was diagnosed as having having symptoms of dyslexia but not specifically dyslexia. At first I was glad to be diagnosed - because the medical profession said I had a condition. That is, I wasn't just a bad or undiscipled kid. However, I was very quickly disappointed with the diagnosis and ended up with nothing. No support, no meds, just a feeling that I had to cope with "it".
Well, 15 difficult years later I learn that maybe it could also be ADD.... I was tested and put on meds for ADD.
My life didn't get better even though my work performance and efficiency tripled.
After seeking meds, for 3-4 yrs, giving up for more than a year and starting over....
I am finding that my problems with distractions, concentration AND impulsiveness are related to obsessive behavior (obsessive thinking) of the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)variety. Prior treatment included stimulant based drugs for ADD and some Prozac for anxiety - but in the long run - while I could do 10 things at once - I drove everyone crazy with too many new ideas and my bad temper....
So now with Prozac to retard obsessive behavior (and ward off mild depression too) and non-stimulant Stattera I think I am moving ahead on the right path.
I am just getting started on the Straterra and think its great! I expect that the dosages will be adjusted over time - but that we'll get it right now.
Seems that 20 years ago ADD was underdiagnosed and Prozac wasn't widely known.

How mature is a 17 year old girl with ADHD?

That depends on the girl. ADHD does not control how she is in every way or affect maturity. There are also different levels of ADHD and how she has been raised and plays a big part. ADHD can be medicated so they have a easier time to concentrate and focus but that has nothing to do with maturity. A 17yo is not an adult yet but more adult than a child. So it depends on the person.
