The way the alternator belt raps around pulleys in the automobile differs by vehicle and engine. An alternator belt in an older vehicle usually just went around the fan blade, the water pump, and the alternator. Today's vehicles are more complicated and might require more pulleys.
The alternator acts as the belt tensioner.
First thing is to look at the bottom passenger side pulleys. These cars have a serpentine belt ( 1 belt for all pulles ). There is an Idler pulley that believe it or not bends when you try to loosen it off ... this tensioner will allow you to change the belt and alternator ... before you change the alternator get someone to look at it it could be just the Voltage Regulator 40 roughly to replace ( It is located on the back side of the Alternator ).
It is the large belt going around all the pulleys on the front of the engine.
Pop the hood and look to see if you have any naked pulleys. If your belt is broken, you will probably lose more than your alternator. Modern cars have serpentine belts that run everything: power steering, water pump, air conditioning, etc.
Always remove the ground wire on the battery first! Then, loosen the belt and slide it off of the alternator wheel. Unplug the alternator. Remove the mounting bolts. Remove the alternator. Reverse the process for installation. BE SURE TO PLUG THE BATT BACK IN. It happens more often than you think ;) ..and be sure to carefully look at how the alternator belt is routed over and around the pulleys. The belt is a "serpertine" type and is a pain to figure out!!!!
Without hearing the sound it's hard to diagnose, but I would look at: Alternator, transmission, serpentine belt & pulleys, depending on where the sound is coming from.
Yes, Raise the hood and look at the left side of the engine. There you will see a black belt wrapping around several pulleys. The small pulley just under the Alternator is the water pump.
look for a tensioner pulley, if you don't know what it looks like. then go to the nearest auto motive store and buy the book on your car. there should be a diagram on how the belt goes around the other pulleys if it is just one big belt, if not then look on the alternator bracket there should be around three bolts that need to be loosened. be sure the belt is tight before you tighten the bolts, put some pressure on the altenator. Hope the info helps...
Well, its black and wraps itself around the smallest pulley on the alternator.
Make a diagram of all the pulleys and draw the belt in. Locate the belt tensionor. Loosen it. Slide belt off of the pulleys. Look at your diagram and install the new belt. Tighten tensionor. There should be little play in the belt after being installed on the pulleys.
On my '96, it's located on the passenger side of the engine, back and down fromthe alternator. It will be very shiny and doesn't look quite like the other pulleys. It's the onlyone that contacts the back, or outside, of the belt.
