Atomic number, being a characteristic property (property that is diff. for each element), it identifies the element, For instance, Oxygen has an atomic number of 8, and it's the only one that has that atomic number, same with any other element, except that no other element has an atomic # of 8. No two elements can share an atomic number.

How do you you work out the number of neutrons in an atom?

Atomic Mass minus atomic number

What does an element's atomic number tell us?

The atomic number is the number of protons that the element has.

What does the atomic number of silver tell you about?

The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. In electrically neutral atoms, the number is also equal to the amount of electrons orbiting around the nucleus of the atom. The higher the atomic number the heavier the atom. The atomic number of silver is 47 and therefore number of protons/electrons is 47. It has 67 neutrons.

What do the atomic number and the mass number tell you about the atom?

the atomic number is the number of protons/electrons in the atom

What do the atomic number and mass number tell you about the atom?

Can an atomic number tell you how many protons an atom has?

The atomic number is the number of protons in an atom's nucleus.

What part of the element tells you that it is that element?

You can tell if a substance is an element or not by it's atoms. If it's a pure element, it will only have one type of atom (e.g. Copper atoms). If it's not an element it will have two or more types of atoms in it (e.g. Copper, Carbon and Lithium atoms). You can tell which element an atom is by the amount of electrons it has (atomic number) For Example: Hydrogen: 1 electron: Atomic Number 1 Helium: 2 electrons: Atomic Number 2 Molybdenum: 42 electrons: Atomic Number 42 Seaborgium: 106 electrons: Atomic Number 106

What does the atomic number tells you?

The atomic number tells you how many protons and electrons are in a specific element.Atomic number tells us about protons. Number of protons that atom contains.

What does the atomic number tell about an atom of that element?

Atomic number = Number of protons

What does the atomic number of an element tell you about that atom?

Atomic number = Number of protons

What does the atomic number of an element tell you about its atom?

It would tell you how many neutrons make up the Nucleus of the atom.

Can you tell from the periodic table how many neutrons are in an atom?

No. Atoms on the Periodic Table are listed by element in order of atomic number, which is the number of protons an atom contains. The number of neutrons in the atoms of an element usually varies among several isotopes.
