it is when you are exercising and burning energy that requires oxygen to complete the process, this is a sustanable pace such as light-moderate exercise that makes you breathe heavier than normal. When it changes to anerobic the body creates energy without oxygen, this may be fast sprinting (you may notice you can do a short sprint whilst holding your breath) or lifting a heavy weight once or twice. But this CANNOT be sustained. So prelonged excercise pace is aerobic.

Actually crunches won't help they are working a different muscle. You need to start doing areobics and work yourself up to 4 20 min workouts a week and start eating healthy and do some weight lift training. That should help a lot!
