An example would be a trusted police department or constabulary, loved and admired by its community is discovered to have been receiving bribes to look the other way whilst certain officials get away with crimes that no private citizen could.
The chief of police receives gifts to instruct the force to look the other way, or even to participate. This is one of the leading tools used by the Mafia.
Corruption doesn't necessarily have to involve cash. In the past certain airlines have been convicted of providing free first class flights around the world to certain congressmen and senators. That in itself is merely questionable. But the word 'corruption' comes into play when it's discovered that the congressman has put before Congress a motion or bill that directly benefits the airline.
And corruption can some in quieter ways, such as when a salesman repeatedly invites his client out to posh dinners, lavish lunches, and provides friendly gifts of theatre tickets. The salesman never asks for anything in return. However, when the salesman presents his products to the business, the person who enjoys all these lavish benefits chooses this salesman's products over anyone else's, even if the price is higher. They do this so as not to lose all the fringe benefits. This is being corrupt.
It even can extend to your local doctor. You are ill and in desperate need of a certain medication. Your doctor writes a range of prescriptions which will take care of your problem and you're happy. Behind the scene, the doctor has prescribed items which all come from the same pharmaceutical company and the doctor is rewarded. As it's illegal for the doctor to receive cash gifts, the doctor is sent invitations to numerous conferences on medical research.
The scenarios all fall under the term of being 'corrupt.'
