Brake Horsepower doesn't "do" anything, it's a rating of the engine's power before any parasitic loads (alternator, transmission, water pump, etc.) are added.

Is brake horsepower different from horsepower?

yes of course.

What is the horsepower of a Triumph America?

According to Triumph, it is 54 bhp (brake horsepower) @ 6,750 rpm. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, horsepower at the output shaft of an engine, turbine, or motor is termed brake horsepower or shaft horsepower.

What is brake horsepower in hvac systems?

Brake horsepower is the hvac motor horsepower before the motor hp is dropped due to a load. Indicated, gross and SAE are other ways to rate horsepower.

What is the difference between brake horsepower and horsepower?

The difference between brake horsepower and horsepower or wheel horsepower, they are the same thing, is that brake horse power is the power produced by the crank. The wheel horsepower is the amount of power delivered to the wheels. Brake horsepower refers to the method used to test the engine. A brake is attached to the engine and used to maintain the engine at a constant RPM at full throttle. The delivered power output is then a simple calculation of RPM times torque. Horse power is based on the average amount of work that a horse could do in a day. It is taken to be 746watts. well you guessed it engine output is also specified in kilowatts so divide by 746 and you have horsepower. As stated above it is all the same thing. There is a difference between advertised horsepower and brake horsepower. Advertised horsepower is what a manufacturer will rate its engine/automobile/machine to produce. Brake horsepower is the actual measured horsepower, for example, of a motor on an engine dynamometer.

Will the car brakes stop the car accelerating at 50mph?

Yes. Assuming the brake system is not damaged brakes can always stop a car faster than the engine can acellerate it. You can think of it this way. Brakes can generate more "negative horsepower" than an engine can generate positive horsepower.

An engine with a brake horsepower of 20 bhp would have a rated horsepower of?

What is the difference between horsepower and brake horsepower?

Horsepower refers to the total power at the driven wheels of a vehicle whilst brake horsepower refers to the net output power posessed by its engine.Further AnswerThe above answer is not altogether correct, because the horsepower is simply the Imperial unit of measurement for power. These days, in most countries, it has been replaced by the watt (or, in practice, kilowatt), which is the SI unit (1 hp = 746 W). 'Brake' refers to the output (as opposed to input) power of a machine. In the case of a car, the brake horsepower (or kilowatts) is the power remaining, after losses due to heat transfer, etc., have been taken into account. In other words, output power (brake power) is input power minus losses.

How much horsepower does a 1967 mustang 390 stock have?

What does BHP of a car signify?

if you dont know what bhp is, its brake horse power, it is worked out by multiplying the torque by the numberb of cylinders (i think) ps. 1 horse has 0.7bhp, the bloke who worked this out assumed a horse has x2 strength as a pony which drew his carriage and this stuck, thhat is why there are many variations of horsepower/brakehorsepower now

What is the mechanical efficiency of an engine that produces 550 brake horsepower and 625 indicated horsepower?

What does brake in brake horsepower define?

What does the word "Brake" mean in Brake Horsepower?Brake refers to the de Prony Brake which was invented by Gaspard de Prony and used to determine engine torque and power. The device imposed known values for loads on the engine's output (crank) shaft (by wrapping a belt around the output shaft) in order to produce resulting specific engine rotational speeds in RPMs. Quantities for torque and horsepower were then calculated using simple formulas of mechanical physics (i.e., Torque = Force x Distance & Horsepower = Torque x RPM / 5252 ;using the inch-lb system). Horsepower calculated using this method is known as Brake Horsepower or bhp.
