Charlie Hebdo is a satirical and provocative weekly newspaper, making fun of the establishment, political elites, religions. It runs lots of Cartoons based on their perception of the news, comments, editorials. Politically on the left side (a mix principally between Communists and Anarchists), they dislike particularly religious extremism, order, Capitalism. Their motto is "the irresponsible newspaper". They are well-known for being the first to reprint the Muhammad Cartoons in the French press.
Prior to the terrorist attack on its staff in Jan. 2015, the newspaper had a small circulation of about 15.000 and was forced to appeal to the generosity of its buyers to live.
One week after the attack, it had 100.000 new subscriptions and the weekly issue, the first after the attack, sold 5 million copies by the middle of the morning ; 2 more million copies had to be reprinted, outnumbering several times the record circulation ever for a French newspaper (the former record was 2.2 million copies).
