It absorbs the nutrients and gets rid of the useless things. The large colon absrobs the solid particles and the small colon absorbs the liquid. It comes out as excrement(useless solids) and urine(useless liquids).

If the colon does not function at all what would be the result?

This would be harmful. The colon is not only responsible for clearing the body of waste products (which also become toxic after some time), it can also extract the last traces of nutrition from the food we have eaten. So if we are without a colon, we would not be able to digest food on our own and we would not receive as much nutrition. Patients with these characteristics need medical assistance for digestion. Many people have no colon, mainly due to colon cancer, but do well. It is true that it not the best result, but that person can live a along time without the colon.
