All that "Downfiring" means is that the speaker is pointed toward the floor within it enclosure. Presumably, there is a part of the speaker enclosure that directs the downward sound so that it projects out into the room. (Or car, I suppose).

I did not find the subwoofer at all annoying, in fact I like my headphones better with the subwoofer and if you don't like a ton of bass you can actually change the amount up or down. And they come with Skullcandy's lifetime warranty
